AI citation tracking (Perplexity / ChatGPT / Gemini)

Updated 2026-05-18

Citation tracking watches Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Gemini for mentions of your domain across the queries you care about. You add a list of queries ("best AI SEO tool", "how to write an llms.txt"); Crawlmind runs them daily, records which URLs each engine cited, and surfaces share-of-voice + new/lost citations over time. Available on Pro + Agency + Enterprise.

Why citation tracking matters

AI answer engines are now sending real referral traffic. A single citation by Perplexity for a high-intent query is worth more than a typical position-3 Google blue link, because the user has already seen your brand *in the answer itself*. Without measurement you're flying blind on a channel that's growing 10× year over year.

Setting up queries

From your organization → Citation tracking → Add query. Each query has:

  • Prompt — the literal question to ask the engine (e.g. "what is llms.txt and which sites use it?")
  • Engines — Perplexity / ChatGPT / Gemini (pick one or more)
  • Schedule — daily, weekly, or manual
  • Brand domain — your own domain so we can detect "owned" citations vs competitors

Quotas vary by plan: Pro = 5 queries × daily, Agency = 25 × daily, Enterprise = custom.

What we measure per run

For each query × engine combination:

  • All cited URLs — the engine's footnote list
  • Position of your domain — first / mid / not cited
  • Snippet — the verbatim text the engine pulled from your page (key for tuning content)
  • Competitor URLs — every other domain cited, for share-of-voice analysis

Share-of-voice dashboard

The citations dashboard plots:

  • Your domain's share of total citations across all tracked queries over time
  • A per-competitor leaderboard
  • New citations (your URL cited this run, not last run) and lost citations
  • Query-level drill-down — which queries are healthy, which are slipping

Cost model

Each query × engine × run costs LLM tokens (we use the engine's API where available, scraping where not). Crawlmind absorbs the cost inside your plan's AI token quota — usage shows in /orgs/<id>/usage. If you blow the quota, additional runs queue until the next monthly reset (no surprise charges).
